Gold for Nicky Hunt
It
is Nicky's first gold of this year's World Cup tournament, and adds to the
silver medals she won in Porec and Antalya. It means she qualifies in top
place for the World Cup Grand Final, which takes place in Edinburgh later this
month. And by qualifying automatically, she also hands a Grand Final place to
fellow Briton Andrea Gales, as GB's highest placed second archer in the
overall standings - Andrea scored points at both Porec and Antalya.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to win the gold," said Nicky, who defeated
Mexico's Linda Ochoa in the final, but needed a one arrow shoot-off, after
their match finished tied at 5-all.
In a tense final, Nicky started well, winning the first two sets and going 4-0
up. But she allowed Ochoa back into it, and after five sets they were tied at
5-5, meaning a one arrow shoot-off. Both archers scored a 9, but Nicky took
the title by virtue of a stronger shot.
It will be Nicky's second successive appearance in the World Cup Grand Final.
Last year in Copenhagen, she finished fourth, after losing both her semi
final, and her third/fourth shoot-off. She and Andrea will line up with six
other women's compounders in Edinburgh, with Ochoa, and the 2008 Grand Final
gold medalist Jamie Van Natta (USA), also in the line-up.
In
the team ladies compound tournament, Nicky, Nichola Simpson and Dani Brown
beat Iran to take the bronze medal. Trailling by a point at the halfway stage,
the GB trio hit nine 10s with their last 12 arrows, while Nichola dropped just
two points throughout the match.
Chris White, Liam Grimwood and Duncan Busby took the silver medal after losing
out to Australia in the final of the men's compound title. In a close match
throughout, the Australians clinched victory with a perfect 60 points in the
fourth end, to win the gold medal by 233-231.
Simon Terry, a silver medalist at last year's Grand Final, has also qualified
for Edinburgh automatically. Though he didn't feature in the medals in
Shanghai, performances at other World Cup events this year meant he finished
fourth in the overall standings.

Great Britain has won a World Cup silver medal, thanks to Larry
Godfrey and Naomi Folkard both are members of Team England for the
Commonwealth Games .
The two GB recurvers fell at the final hurdle when they lost to Korea in
Saturday's final, missing out on the gold by 134-129. But it was still a great
effort by the GB two.
The Korean pairing of Kim Moon Jung and Oh Jin Hyeh were always on top, taking
a one point lead after the first end, then stretching it to seven points at
the halfway stage. In difficult conditions caused by the wind, Naomi seemed to
find the going tougher, as she hit a 3 with one of her arrows.
She did likewise in the third end, but thanks to two 10s from Larry, there was
no change in the seven points deficit going into the fourth and final end.
This time both Larry and Naomi put up a sterling show and chipped away at
their deficit, but the Koreans hung on to take the gold.

English archers on the paralympic squad have won a gold medal and two silvers on the final day of competition at the European Grand Prix tournament at Stoke Mandeville for disabled archers from around the world. The gold medallist was once again Danielle Brown, in the women’s compound tournament to continue what is becoming a great summer for her. Last month she secured a place at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later this year, and won the National Series tournament at Lilleshall. She came second at another National Series event, at Bradford, earlier this month.

England’s Alan Wills will go to the Delhi 2010
Commonwealth Games as a world champion after taking gold at the FITA World Field
Archery Championships in Hungary yesterday (Sunday). The 28-year-old from
Frizington in Cumbria won an all-English men’s individual recurve final, in
Visegrad beating Jon Shales 54-51.
There was also a silver medal for another of England’s Delhi archers, Naomi
Folkard. She went down 53-45 to Christine Bjerendal of Sweden in the women’s
individual recurve final. The field archery championships differ from those that
will feature in Delhi as it involves shooting at different sized targets at
different distances and at different gradients on a field course. In the Delhi
competition targets will be at a uniform distance of 70m.
But Wills said his victory had given him a real boost. “It hasn’t really
sunk in yet,” he said today (Monday). “This will give me some more
confidence and it will also be really good for the team. We’ve got a really
strong team. “I was something like seventh after the first couple of
qualifying rounds and I wasn’t performing up to my potential,” he said. “I
decided to just give it my best and go for it, and it all came together.”
Wills said he is looking forward to competing in Delhi, where archery makes only
its second appearance on the Commonwealth Games programme. “The Commonwealth
Games are a once in a lifetime opportunity. Archery hasn’t been at the
Commonwealth Games for 28 years and I’m really looking forward to it,” he
added. Wills competed at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games but just missed out on a
place in the quarter-finals.
Folkard, who is 26 and from Kidderminster in Worcestershire, won a bronze medal
in the World Field Archery Championships four years ago. She has competed at the
last two Olympic Games. She had to beat team-mate and fellow England team
member for Delhi, Amy Oliver, in the shoot-off for a place in the semi-finals in
Hungary. Oliver, from Rotherham, finished just out of the medals in fifth.
