England Field Archery Team 2007

The 2007 field Archery season has started well with England competing in the 3 shoot challenge currently between England and Wales .

The 3 shoots selected for the challenge this year are:-

Dearne Valley   8th & 9th April,    Pentref Spring Shoot 14th & 15th April,   Crawley September.

The winners are the Nation with the highest total points tally at the end of the 3 shoots

Home Nations Field Archery Competition 2007

The 2007 “Home Nations” field archery competition was held on May 26th & 27th.  The Home Nations is always held as part of the GNAS All British Field Championships, this year it was hosted by Pentref  Bowman in South Wales .

 The Team

The team representing England has to consist of one archer from each discipline and include at least one man and one woman, when there are no entries for a particular discipline substitution rules apply.

Team members were:-

Compound Unlimited =          Steve Gooden

Compound Unlimited =          Peter Frost (Substitution with Freestyle Recurve)

Freestyle Recurve       =          Jon Shales

Compound Barebow   =          Jane Rees (Substitution with Barebow Recurve)

Barebow Recurve       =          Tim Mundon

Traditional                   =          Adam Stevens

Longbow                     =          Joe Lloyd

All Team members entries were funded by the English Archery Federation (EAF)

The shoot

The competition was held over 2 different courses, one unmarked distances and the other marked. The sited disciplines were shooting the unmarked on day one and the marked course on day two, both courses were very challenging with the course designers using all the slopes possible. The marked course was incorporating the use of the mountainous side of Pentref and the unmarked course was using the cross slope areas in and around the quarry.

The weather helped make the shooting very challenging as well, on day one the sun did not really shine very much but it didn’t rain, on day two we get a little rain and wind but it could have been a lot worse.

As a result of the course a lot of archers did not shoot as high a score as normal but all members of the England team performed extremely well coping with all the conditions and challenges put before them.

Our longbow archer Joe Lloyd managed to shoot a arrow head award on day 2 with 212, this is the highest unmarked score I have seen for a longbow in 4 years of shooting most of the GNAS field shoots, and especially when done on a day of wind and rain at Pentref, one of the hardest courses we shoot in the UK.

Result

The result is purely based on the team which shoots the highest totals score over the two day competition. England managed to shoot a combined score which exceeded the total score of both Wales and Ireland ,

“YES”     ENGLAND WON!!

All team members performed extremely well during the two days and it was a fantastic deserved result for them, most of the team also had individual rewards in their discipline.

The England Team would like to Thank “Caswells Group” for the Sponsorships of the England Shirts for 2007.

Photos of team members will be in the Gallery page soon (webmaster)

Dearne Valley 8 & 9 April 2007

Dearne Valley Shoot went very well, all members of the team shot very well over the weekend with several winning their style as well as contributing to the overall points tally for the team.

We were very lucky with the weather over the weekend.

Saturday was bright and sunny and quite warm; a little bit of wind on one side of the course but not enough to cause any problems.

Sunday was not bright at first and also a little cold, the wind had also picked up causing a few of the longer shots to be a bit more challenging than normal but everyone coped very well. Just as we left the course the sun broke through to warm us up whilst waiting for the results.

England managed to field a full team for the shoot, with substitutions in place for Compound Unlimited and Compound Barebow. Currently we do not have regular archers competing in these styles who travel around the field shoots.

Pentref Spring Shoot 14 & 15 April 2007

The Pentref Spring shoot was very challenging as expected with the course designers introducing several new shots, which had not been seen before, as well as using the mountain and the quarry to make the most of the up, down and across slope shots.

The team still worked hard and managed to shoot very well. Unfortunately we did not have a full team for this shoot; we were unable to fill the position for “Traditional”, a recurve archer shooting wooden arrows, the only substitution for this is a longbow archer but only one English longbow archer was present at the shoot.

The weather this weekend was fantastic if you liked the sun; it was glorious sunshine from first thing Saturday morning and was still shining when we left at 6pm Sunday.

We would like to thank the organisers of both shoots as they agreed the use of their shoot for the 3 shoot challenge, we do try and hold one in the north and south of England and one in Wales .  Crawley will be an exciting finish as both teams have a good chance of winning after the first 2 rounds.

The England Team would like to thank “Caswells Group” for sponsoring the team with the England shirts. They kindly agreed to continue their sponsorship for 2007 after doing so in 2006, very much appreciated.
